TAC Internet Setup Instructions for Windows 95/98

STEP 1: Verifying that Dial-up Networking Is Installed 

1.     Press the <START> button, and select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL then double-click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. Select the WINDOWS SETUP tab. Highlight the COMMUNICATIONS component and press the DETAILS button. If DIAL-UP NETWORKING is installed as one of your components, there will be a check in the box to the left. If there is a check in the box go on to step 2. If there is no check in the box, follow these steps: 

2.     Check the box next to Dial-Up Networking and click the OK button. Then follow the prompts.

3.     When you restart, you’ll be asked to type in your name and password. If security is important to you, type in your name and a password. If security is not an issue for you type in your name, but don’t use a password. (press ENTER)

STEP 2: Verifying that the Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP Are Installed

1.     Go to the CONTROL PANEL then double-click the NETWORK icon then click on the CONFIGURATION tab. Both DIAL-UP ADAPTER and TCP/IP should be present. If both are present, proceed to step 3. If the DIAL-UP ADAPTER is not present, follow these steps to add it:

2.     If you are running Windows 98 then the Microsoft Family Logon Client must be installed, if you are running Windows 95 this step can be disregarded.  To add the Microsoft Family Logon, hit the ADD button. Then double-click CLIENT then scroll down the list and select MICROSOFT. Choose the Microsoft Family Logon from the listing on the right then click OK.

3.     To add the DIAL-UP ADAPTER, hit the ADD button. Then double-click ADAPTOR then scroll down the list and select MICROSOFT. Choose the DIAL-UP ADAPTER from the listing on the right then click OK.

4.     If TCP/IP is not present, follow these steps to add it. Click the ADD button double-click PROTOCOL. Select MICROSOFT. Select TCP/IP. Click OK

5.    Select DIAL-UP ADAPTOR, and click the PROPERTIES button. Choose the BINDINGS tab, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked, if it is not possible to check this box then proceed to step 3. Your computer will prompt you to restart. Click OK twice.

Step 3: Configuring  TCP/IP Protocol

1.       Go to the CONTROL PANEL, and double-click the NETWORK icon then click on the TCP/IP Protocol and press the

PROPERTIES button. Make sure the settings match those below:

·          IP ADDRESS - Set the IP address to “Obtain an IP Address Automatically”.

·          WINS CONFIGURATION - Select Disable WINS Resolution

·          DNS CONFIGURATION - Set to Disable DNS

2.       Press OK. Press OK again. Your TCP/IP Protocol set-up is now complete. Restart the computer.

STEP 4: Setting Up The Connection Icon

1.       Open up MY COMPUTER from the desktop and double-click the DIAL-UP NETWORKING folder double-click the MAKE NEW CONNECTION icon. You will be asked for the name of the computer you are dialing.

2.       Type TAC ISP and click the <NEXT> button.

3.       If you are on the CENTRAL COAST enter the phone number 0198333128 for the $35 and $25 accounts, or 0198333128 for the $20 & $10 accounts.
If you are in SYDNEY the numbers are 0198333128 for the $35 and $25 accounts and 0198333128 for the $20 & $10 accounts.

4.       Press the <NEXT> button, then the <FINISH> button and the new TAC ISP icon will be created.

5.       Click the right mouse button on the TAC ISP icon. Click on PROPERTIES.

·          Do NOT tick “use country code and area code”. If this box is checked, then uncheck it.

·          Click the SERVER TYPE button. In the Type of Dial-up Server box, you should have “PPP, Windows 95....”

·          Under advanced options, uncheck “Log on to network” and check  “Enable Software Compression.”

·          Under allowed network protocols, check “TCP/IP” and CLEAR the others

·          Click the TCP/IP settings button. Check the “Server assigned IP address” button.

·          Check the “Server Assigned Name Server Address” button.

·          Click OK at the bottom.

·          Click OK again.

6.       In Dialup Networking click on “Connections“ and then on “Settings” check the “Redial” checkbox and type “100” in the “before giving up retry” box.

7.       If there is an option “Prompt For Information Before Dialling” make sure that this is checked.  Then click OK.

8.       In Dialup Networking right click on the TAC ISP icon then click on “Create Shortcut”.  When prompted with the error message click “Yes”. This will create a shortcut on the desktop.

NB: All accounts need to be created BEFORE you proceed to the next step.

STEP 5: Connecting to TAC ISP

1.       Double-click on the TAC ISP icon on your Desktop area. This will bring up a login screen. Enter your USERNAME and PASSWORD in this screen, and check the “Save Password” option.

2.       Click the CONNECT button, and your modem will start dialing.

3.       You should now be connected to the Internet.

You have now finished the Windows 95/98 Internet Setup procedure!

STEP 6: Other Settings

PROXY SETTINGS  (ONLY DO THIS STEP IF YOU WERE PREVIOUSLY WITH ANOTHER ISP)

·         INTERNET EXPLORER 5: Open Internet Explorer click on the TOOLS button, click on INTERNET OPTIONS, click on the CONNECTION tab, then click the SETTINGS button. Unselect the option CONNECT THROUGH A PROXY SERVER then click OK

·         INTERNET EXPLORER 4: Open Internet Explorer click on the VIEW button, click on INTERNET OPTIONS, click on the CONNECTION tab. Unselect the option CONNECT THROUGH A PROXY SERVER then click OK.

·         INTERNET EXPLORER 3: Open Internet Explorer click on the VIEW button then click on OPTIONS click on the CONNECTION tab. Unselect the option CONNECT THROUGH A PROXY SERVER then click OK.

·         NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR: Open Netscape click on OPTIONS click on NETWORK PREFERENCES on the PROXIES tab click DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET then click OK.

·         NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR: Open Netscape click on EDIT click on PREFERENCES then click on the plus next to the ADVANCED section. Select DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET then click OK.

MAIL SETTINGS           (must be set or mail will not work)

INTERNET MAIL: Open Internet Mail and click on the MAIL pull down menu, click on OPTIONS.  Select the SERVER tab at the top of the page.  Enter in all of the applicable information listed below.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS 4& 5: Open Outlook Express and click on the TOOLS pull down menu, click on ACCOUNTS.  Select the MAIL tab at the top of the page, click the ADD button and then follow the setup wizard through entering all of the applicable information below.

·         POP3 server (incoming mail) :      mail.tac.com.au

·         SMTP server (outgoing mail) :      mail.tac.com.au

·         POP3 account is your Username.      (Don’t type in Username, your Username is the name you log on with)

·         Your EMAIL address is :            username@tac.com.au

News Settings:          (must be set or news will not work)

INERNET NEWS: Open Internet News and click on NEWS pull down menu, click on OPTIONS. Select the SERVER tab at the top of the page and enter in all the applicable information listed below.

OUTLOOK EXPRESS 4& 5: Open Outlook Express and click on the TOOLS pull down menu, click on ACCOUNTS.  Select the NEWS tab at the top of the page, click the ADD button and then follow the setup wizard through entering all of the applicable information below.

·         News server :                  news.tac.com.au

Home Page Log On

INTERNET EXPLORER 5: Open Internet Explorer in the address bar type www.tac.com.au press enter, click tools, click INTERNET OPTIONS, click the USE CURRENT button, then OK.

INTERNET EXPLORER 4: Open Internet Explorer in the address bar type www.tac.com.au press enter, click view, click INTERNET OPTIONS, click the USE CURRENT button, then OK.

INTERNET EXPLORER 3: Open Internet Explorer in the address bar type www.tac.com.au press enter, click view, click OPTIONS, click the USE CURRENT button, then OK.

NETSCAPE NAVIGATOR: Open Netscape click OPTIONS click GENERAL PREFERENCES click the APPEARANCE tab check radio button Home Page Location then type in http://www.tac.com.au then click OK.

NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR: Open Netscape click EDIT then PREFERENCES. Select NAVIGATOR from the list and enter http://www.tac.com.au under the HOMEPAGE LOCATION section.

There are many other programs that may require setting up but we have decided to support only Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator. Some Internet applications worth having a look at are as follows.

·         www.mirc.co.uk      - A chat client which has anywhere between 50 – 25,000 other Internet users to chat to.

·         www.icq.com - Another chat client which is similar to mIRC but allows you to see who is on-line at the time and also have conference chats, or search for people with similar interests to yourself.

·         www.winfiles.com      - A site full of Internet applications, software & driver updates, on-line help etc.

·         www.cnet.com       - Cnet offers many game reviews, shareware downloads and software updates.



TAC CONDITIONS OF USE.

Like all ISP servers TAC has conditions of use. It is very important you read these conditions, as they are the basis of our agreement with you.

If you read these conditions and don’t wish to accept them you have seven (7) days to cancel your account with TAC and receive a full refund less the greater amount of $2 per hour used or 40 cents per Megabyte used.

If you decide to accept the conditions of use by not canceling your account with TAC within the 7 days you agree to be bound by the conditions of use each time you log on to TAC.
